Canada surpassed its international target of 10% protection of marine and coastal areas in 2019. The following year, Canada joined by other countries, set a new international target of protecting 30% of Canada's oceans by 2030. With all marine protected areas and marine refuges considered to date, Canada has conserved 15.54% of Canada's marine and coastal areas.
Protected areas include Marine Protected Areas created under the Oceans Act, National Marine Conservation Areas, and marine portions of National Wildlife Areas, Migratory Bird Sanctuaries, National Parks, and provincial protected areas. Protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECM) both contribute to marine conservation targets. To date, all areas that qualify as OECM have been fisheries area closures. Fisheries area closures that meet OECM criteria are known as “marine refuges.”

Canada's National Wildlife Areas, Migratory Bird Sanctuaries, National Parks and National Historic Sites can include terrestrial and marine environments. Only the marine portions of these areas are counted towards Canada's marine conservation targets.
Areas reported for Parks Canada Agency, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and the combined provincial areas are current as of December 31, 2021, as reported in the Canadian Protected and Conserved Areas Database (CPCAD).
Ten (10) of Québec's territorial reserves for protected area purposes overlap with Fisheries and Oceans Canada's marine refuges in the marine waters of the Estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence. Sites are accounted for in both provincial and Fisheries and Oceans Canada totals, but removed in the overall total.

Percentages are determined by dividing the area of the site in km² by 5,750,000 km² (Canada's total ocean territory) and multiplying by 100.
